The sun is setting and moonlight is just beginning to touch the flowers in the garden. Her dress catches on the roses that reach out their thorny tendrils from the unkempt flowerbed. He waits by the grotto wall with a single rose bud in his hand. Her diamond hairpin comes loose and falls to the floor as he reaches up to unleash her black locks. The wind whispers through the grasses in the meadow and shakes the heads of the peonies in the garden. She turns her head as she hears her name called from the distance, kisses him quickly then turns to go back to her life in the big house. 

At dawn her husband wanders sleeplessly through the dahlias and scattered rose petals and bends to pick up the lost hairpin, abandoned on the ground next to the imprint of a man's footprint that is not his own.
